1960s
Sr. Germaine Corbin ’62 BA led the Extended Run Players to Baltimore in June to perform at the Senior Theatre USA Festival. They performed “I’m Herbert” and a version of “Memories on Review: Tales from WWII,” which is an original piece that the company created from interviews with San Antonio residents and their experiences during World War II. Sr. Germaine also facilitated a couple of workshops during the festival.
Sr. Kathleen McDonagh ’63 BA will celebrate her 60th year as a Sister of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament of Corpus Christi on April 1.
Judith Zapata Rodriguez ’66 BA, ’72 MA retired after 32 years with the Brownsville Independent School District. She and her husband, Robert, have relocated from Brownsville to San Antonio. They are the proud grandparents of Juliette Isabella LaWare.
Ma Luisa Shaffer Jackson ’67 BA has translated a book regarding the Maya from English to Spanish and is looking for a publisher. The book is based on Mayan folklore and includes the introduction and a glossary of pre-Hispanic authority figures, which are used throughout the book.
1970s
Georgie McAteer ’70 BA is happily married to Joel McAteer. They have four children, Alizon, Adrienne, Michelle and Joel. They also have three grandchildren, Liam, Conner, and Isabella Jane. McAteer is the director of Battle Command Training for III Corps, Fort Hood, and is overseeing operations and simulations training at Forts Carson, Bliss, Riley, Sill and Knox. She was a winner for Innovation in Modeling Simulation in 2003 and 2007. She performs at local community theaters, and most recently, she was Aunt Eller in “Oklahoma!” and Abby in “Arsenic and Old Lace.”
Dr. Carolina “Canie” Gonzalez Huerta ’71 BSN recently was awarded the Mary Mahoney Award, which is given to an individual who has made significant contributions to advancing nursing opportunities for minorities. The award was established in 1936 and since 1952 has been awarded by the American Nurses Association biennially. She was recognized for making significant contributions to opening and advancing programs in nursing to minority groups and for enhancing the professional health opportunities for the millions of residents living in South Texas’ Rio Grande Valley.
Barbara Macha Neill ’71 BSN and husband James Michael Neill ’75 BSN of Blacksburg, Va., have a son, Jim, who is now working as a pharmacist at Lackland Air Force Base.
Lisbeth Kolean Pennington ’72 BSN is living in Texarkana with her husband, Lee. They celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary this year. Pennington is enjoying her retirement from the nursing industry.
Monica S. Messer ’73 BSN started the doctoral program at the University of South Florida in Tampa in August. She is pursuing a degree in nursing practice. Messer is a board certified wound care specialist and is involved in developing survey tools to improve hospital pressure ulcer prevention programs. She has spent 30 years in the U.S. Air Force Nurse Corps and has published and lectured extensively in the areas of wound care and pressure ulcer prevention and care. She has also served as consultant to the Air Force Surgeon General and the Department of Defense in wound care. She received her master’s degree from the University of California San Francisco. Messer lives in Riverview, Fla., with her husband of 36 years, James Gardner Messer.
Beverly Lejeski ’74 BS is now the associate superintendent for curriculum for the Archdiocese of San Antonio.
Joe Pickard ’77 BBA is proud of his son, Jay Pickard, who graduated with a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Denver Law School in May.
1980s
Mary Hauger Richter ’81 BSN and her husband, Alex, celebrated their 27th wedding anniversary in March. In 2006, they renewed their vows at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Midland, Texas. They have four children: Amanda, Veronica, Alex Michele and Nathan. Amanda completed her Bachelor of Science in engineering science, cum laude, from Trinity University in May and is employed at Southwest Research Institute as a research engineer in the space sciences division. Veronica graduated as a National Merit Scholar from Midland High School and is attending Trinity University majoring in engineering science. Alex Michele is a high school junior and is considering studying health sciences at UIW. Nathan is in sixth grade at St. Ann’s School. Mary is employed by Texas Oncology, PA, in Midland.
Glenn R. Badinelli ’83 BA and Laura M. Monarque ’83 BSN are living in Arizona and have three children. Badinelli is working for the Department of Agriculture and Monarque is two semesters from completing her master’s degree to be a nurse practioner.
Janie Barrera ’87 MBA is the CEO of ACCION Texas and has recently entered into a five-year contract with Citigroup. ACCION Texas will be Citigroup’s national provider for handling the underwriting, servicing and collections for micro loans.
1990s
Linda Calvert Jacobson ’90 BA had three of her wildflower paintings licensed for a line of artist-inspired collectible watches. One of them was for sale on Bid TV, which is one of England’s shopping networks. To see some of her work, visit www.LindaCalvertJacobson.com.
Edward Leos ’93 BA finished producing the latest issue of his nationally-distributed digital travel magazine “The Hotel Guide.” The issue can be seen at www.thehotelguide.com. Edward also recently joined the UIW Alumni Recreational Softball team, which competes against other alumni associations that have local chapters in San Antonio.
Rosie Virginia (Gonzalez) Huth ’94 BA recently took a new position at Logicalis, Inc. as the manager of business development for the HP Server Product Line. She has a senior role in managing a multimillion dollar line and added responsibilities in a multinational company. She lives in Chandler, Ariz., with her husband, Gary, their daughter Dana, 10, and son Drew Valdez, 17. She and her husband walked 60 miles over a three-day period for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3 Day Walk in San Diego in 2006 and 2007 in honor and in memory of Gary’s younger sister, Susan Marie Huth Olson. The team raised nearly $100,000. They will join the walk again in 2008.
Michele M. Lopez-Glynn ’94 BS opened a pediatrics clinic, Mission Pediatrics, PA, in Seguin in January. She has lived with her husband, Kevin Glynn, in Seguin since 2005.
Fr. David Szatkowski, SCJ ’95 BA was awarded the License in Canon Law (JCL) after having completed the Argumenta proposita pro examine ad Licentiam in Iure Canonico consequendam at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (the Angelicum) in Rome, Italy.
Justin Rodriguez ’97 BBA is the District 7 councilman for the San Antonio City Council. He earned his law degree from the University of Wisconsin.
Daniel Dominic Savedra ’97 BA is now the head high school choir director at Veteran’s Memorial High School in the Mission County Independent School District.
2000s
Randy E. Sanchez II '06 BBA and Jerry Duchene Saavedra 04 BA were paid campaign staffers for the Obama Campaign for Change in Indiana. Saavedra is pictured at left with President-elect Barak Obama. Sanchez is pictured with Michelle Obama.
Kevin E. Buchek Esq. ’00 BA was recently promoted to project manager and general counsel at E.M. Harris Construction Company. He also serves as a member of the board of directors for Child Center Marygrove. He received his law degree from St. Louis University.
Jennifer V. Ramos ’00 BBA, ’05 MAA is the District 3 councilwoman for the San Antonio City Council.
Tara Tovar-Vidales ’00 BS recently completed her doctoral degree at the University of North Texas Health Science Center. She graduated with a degree in biology and was a member of the first group of McNair Scholars. The title of her dissertation is “Tissue Transglutaminase in Glaucoma.” Dr. Tovar-Vidales is the first McNair Scholar to earn a doctoral degree.
Arnulfo Maldonado ’01 BA was recently awarded the Fabergé Theater Award for Costume Design Fellowship.
Diana Meneses ’02 BA was awarded a Fellow/RA position through the Institute of Humanities Research. She will be helping to develop a documentary film about Padre Martinez of New Mexico. She is pursuing a doctoral degree in history at Arizona State University.
Yleana Small-Torres ’02 BA is a fourth grade teacher with the San Antonio Independent School District. She was accepted into graduate school at the University of Texas at San Antonio and will be pursuing a degree in reading. She has two children; Briana, 10, and Juliana, 4.
Lisa A. Jurgajtis ’03 BBA accepted a new position at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She is the fiscal manager of the Campus Recreation Center.
Nora Cadena ’04 BBA, ’07 MAA has been named the Business Office manager at UIW. She has been employed at UIW since 1999 and has more than 20 years of financial experience.
Henry Lopez ’04 BBA received a Master of Arts in community counseling with distinction in May from St. Mary’s University.

Andre Porter ’05 BA is living in London and has worked as a menswear design assistant for Jsen Wintle for two seasons. He recently accepted a position with Balenciaga Homme and plans to produce a bespoke menswear collection in upcoming seasons.
Lionel Sosa ’05 LHD (Hon.) was named to an 11-member board to determine who will receive the $3 billion allocation for cancer research from Proposition 15, which was passed by voters last year. Proposals for the allocation will be submitted to the scientific advisory board from across the state. Sosa is married to former faculty member Katherine Sosa, and his brother is Robert Sosa, the UIW director of Foundations, Corporate and Government Relations.
Wanita Mercer ’06 BA is working at UIW’s Office of Admissions as a freshman counselor. Her recruitment area includes Houston, Corpus Christi, the Gulf Coast and the Coastal Bend. She is the daughter UIW professor Michael Mercer.
Pablo Pena ’07 BBA, ’08 MAA received his master’s degree with distinction in May and was admitted into the UIW doctoral program.

Patricia White Kerwin ’69 BA welcomed her grandchild, Patrick Carlile Forrester, on July 8. Patrick weighed 5 pounds, 15 ounces and was 19.25 inches long. Michelle and Keith Kerwin are Patrick’s parents, and Emma is his big sister.
Victor Molina ’93 BS and Maria Gomez Molina welcomed Valente Damian on May 13. He was 7 pounds, 13 ounces and 20 inches long. Valente has a big sister, Valeria.
Ricardo Antonio Chavira ’96 BA and Marcia Dietzel Chavira welcomed their second child, Bélen Elysabeth, on July 28. They also have a 5-year-old son, Tomás.
