Gift to Establish Professorship in Homeland Security

UIW has been named the beneficiary of a Charitable Remainder Unitrust established by Dr. A. David Mangelsdorff. The unitrust will support the A. David Mangelsdorff Professorship of Homeland Security in the H-E-B School of Business and Administration. The A. David Mangelsdorff Professor will promote interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship that supports national security and community preparedness. The Mangelsdorff Professor will work with business and community leaders to understand and develop strategies to safeguard the region’s major economic assets and protect important trade and commerce.
Mangelsdorff, a professor and psychologist, lectures on research methods in health care, international health issues, telecommunications and other topics at the Army-Baylor University Graduate Program in Health and Business Administration. We are thankful for Dr. Mangelsdorff’s generosity and welcome him as the newest member of the Verbum Society, a giving society for those who have named UIW in their estate plan.
Endowment Created to Honor Retiree
Mary Helen Pinner ’46 established an endowment for the Mabee Library in Mendell Morgan's name.
After 33 years of dedicated service, Mendell D. Morgan Jr., former dean of Library Services, retired May 31. During his tenure, the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Library was built and many changes and improvements were seen, including a collection now containing more than 235,000 volume equivalents, 40 subscription databases and access to more than 48,000 periodicals. Morgan oversaw immense changes in libraries during his years at Incarnate Word. The Mabee Library today provides electronic and physical access to a wealth of information, resources and services, a far cry from the card catalogs many of us experienced in our research days.
In recognition of Morgan’s significant contributions and his untiring support of students and colleagues, Mary Helen Pinner’46 established the Mendell D. Morgan Jr. Endowment for the Mabee Library. Pinner together with her husband, Bill, has created a special gift in honor of a distinguished librarian, and we are deeply grateful. At Morgan’s retirement party held May 13, many friends honored him with a gift to his endowment.
Strengthening Faculty for the Future
The Legacy Tree recognizes donors who make gifts of $1,000 or more to the Faculty Development Endowment.
In September, the University of the Incarnate Word began a two-year campaign to raise $500,000 for UIW’s Faculty Development Endowment Fund. Our own UIW faculty members were the first to respond and contribute. Dr. Denise Doyle, provost, made a generous $50,000 gift and issued a challenge to her fellow faculty members asking them to match her contribution through UIW’s 2007 and 2008 Employee Campaigns. At the conclusion of the 2007 campaign, the faculty, staff and administration had raised $150,000 in support of the Faculty Development Endowment Fund.
The university’s alumni and friends are asked to show their support of our faculty and continue the legacy of a faith-based education, established by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, by making a gift to the endowment. A well-funded Faculty Development Endowment will allow the university to attract and retain an academically talented faculty and provide faculty members with additional professional growth opportunities that will enhance our students’ learning experience.
To assist in this initiative, the university has created a Legacy Tree to recognize donors who make gifts of $1,000 or more in honor or memory of a faculty member who has influenced their lives and helped to make them who they are today. Those who contribute a minimum gift of $1,000 a year are also considered associates of the university.
