1950s
Carol Crozier Keller ’58 BS, ’87 M.Ed. was recently named the 2008 San Antonio Musical Club’s Volunteer of the Year. While at UIW, she served as president of the student council and a charter member of the Eta Beta chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. She is retired and spends her days volunteering for organizations in San Antonio.
1960s
Rita Shaw Reindl ’60 BSN is celebrating her eighth year of retirement after a 40-year nursing career. She wants to hear from classmates, so please e-mail her at [email protected].
Sr. Kathleen McDonagh, IWBS, ’63 BA will celebrate the 60th anniversary of her Profession of Religion Vows in Corpus Christi, Texas, with the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament on April 25.
Maria Cabrales Stechschulte ’64 BA is retired from the National Academy of Sciences where she was a senior/supervisor accountant in the Grants and Contracts Accounting Department. She has three grown children and one grandchild.
Sr. Eilish Ryan ’68 BA, ’76 MA has been appointed the Msgr. Thomas A. French Chair. Her term will run from August 2009 – May 2012.
1970s
Col. Laura Boone ’71 BSN, USAF, NC (Ret.) had the opportunity to promote her oldest daughter, Christy Snow, to captain, USAF, MSC, on March 2 at Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas. Her husband, Master Sgt. Ken Boone, USAF (Ret.), was there along with their son-in-law, Dennis, and grandchildren, Kalen, 6, and Ryker, 1.
Regina Murphy Awtry ’73 BS was recently awarded the 2008–2009 Administrator of the Year award from the California Association of School Administrators, Region XVI. She is the principal of Avalon High School in Los Angeles and serves as the president of the Los Angeles Unified School District Senior High School Options Principals Organization. She was chosen to serve on the Secondary Principals Task Force for LAUSD’s Chief Instructional Officer. The school district is the second largest in the country. Her aunt was the late Mother Columkille Colbert, CCVI, President Emeritus of UIW.
Gayle Biehunko Sette ’73 BA is celebrating her third year of retirement from the IBM Company after 30 years of service. She and her husband, Tom, enjoy hiking, reading and volunteering in the Tucson, Ariz., community.
Stephen Walker ’75 MA was elected Justice of the Peace in the Nov. 4 general election for Precinct 2 in San Antonio.
Ricardo “Ricky” Moguel ’78 BA is living in Belize with his three children and his wife of 17 years. He has served as the minister counselor at the Embassy of Belize and now serves as the consul general for Belize.
Brig. Gen. Linda Jackson Stierle ’78 BSN, USAF, announced her retirement in November 2008 after serving for eight years as the CEO of the American Nurses Association.
1980s
Ann (Guajardo) Anderson ’82 BSN continues to practice nursing in Houston, where she has lived for the past 14 years. Her eldest son, Zachary, is a freshman pitcher on the UIW baseball team.
The Rev. Dr. Mark Cannaday ’86 BA retired June 1 from the active ministry in the Episcopal Church. He and his wife, Doris, still reside in Midland, Texas. Their first grandchild, Hailey Grace Cannaday, was born on the last Sunday of Fr. Mark’s tenure at Holy Trinity, Feb. 24, 2008.
Dr. Arturo Chavez ‘89 BA, one of UIW’s religious studies part-time faculty members, president of MACC and a UIW Alumnus of Distinction, was appointed by President Obama to sit as a member of the Council for Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships.
Carol Zernial ’89 MA has been named the vice president for community relations of WellMed. She will be responsible for the company’s outreach efforts locally and nationally. WellMed is a healthcare company specializing in senior care, with more than 80,000 patients and insured members, primarily in Texas and Florida. She will also serve as the executive director of the WellMed Charitable Foundation.
1990s
Honorary Doctoral Degree of Divinity
The Rev. Trevor D. Alexander ’96 BA was recently awarded an Honorary Doctoral Degree of Divinity from Saint Thomas Christian College and Seminary in Jacksonville, Fla. He works at UIW as the assistant director of Campus Ministry and also serves as a member of the Alumni Board of Directors, where he chairs the on-campus events committee.
Valerie De La Rosa ’90 BA recently earned her master’s degree from Our Lady of the Lake University. She is a certified Library Media Specialist.
Mary Pat Szutenbach ’90 MSN earned her Ph.D. in human services administration with a concentration in healthcare administration in August. For her dissertation, she conducted a qualitative study that looked at the incidence of bullying between staff nurses and how bullying effects nurse recruitment and retention.
Marianne Makar ’91 BA was recently promoted and now serves as the budget officer for the Brookings Institute in Washington, D.C.
Graciela Lopez-Cox ’92 MSN participated with the San Antonio Chapter of the American Red Cross during Hurricane Ike as an intern to Disaster Services Administration. She also traveled to the Dominican Republic with food for the hungry in June and July of 2008 and went to Australia with the UIW Diocese for World Youth Day where the Pope said Mass.
Steven Lora ’93 MBA is the president of MOTIF Modern Living and was awarded the “Most Creative Display” at Austin Home & Garden Show. The store also garnered national attention by recently being named Umbra’s Retail Partner of the Year for 2008 and one of the year’s Top 50 Retailers by Home Accents Today.
Dr. Desiree Kornrum-Byrne ’94 BBA was invited to serve as a panelist in October at the annual Texas Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators Conference and was also named the chair of the Nominations and Elections Committee. She also served as a panelist for the Association of Texas Lenders for Education in May. The topic was “What Changed in the School’s World (Education Loans Then and Now).” She is the assistant director of financial assistance at UIW.
William Davis ’95 BBA is serving his fourth consecutive term as president of the Board of Directors for the Eagle Pass Chamber of Commerce.
Adam Spana ’96 BA received his MLS from the University of North Texas in December.
Lisa Luna ’97 BA received a first place award for her Family-Social Pages at the 81st South Texas Press Association Better Newspaper Contest, held in April 2008. She is the Lifestyles editor for the Pleasanton Express and also serves as a committee member for the first Sip for Sjogren’s fundraiser, which was a fine water-tasting event. The event raised more than $13,000 for the Sjogren’s Syndrome Foundation.
The Rev. Joseph De Leon ’98 MA successfully completed his doctoral defense in theology at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley.
Ronald Garrido ’98 BBA participated in the 2008 San Antonio Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon, finishing with a time of 2 hours and 12 minutes. He completed the half-marathon and is looking forward to running the full marathon in 2009.
2000s
Alumna has book published
Roxanna (Montes) Bazaldua ’98 BA, ’01 M.Ed. is celebrating the publishing of her book, which started as a class assignment at UIW. Dr. Amalia Mondriguez, a UIW professor of foreign language, thought the story was so good, she edited the piece and included it in her own publication, “Soñar no suesta nada.” Later, Raining Popcorn Press illustrated the piece, and it was published. “The Legend of the Cascarón” is now available.
Carry Bunker ’00 BA was recently promoted to DE-IV, adjudicating claims for Social Security disability benefits. She has been with the Division of Rehabilitation Services in Austin for five years.
Kathy C. Elder Esq. ’00 BBA, summa cum laude, opened a private practice law office, The Law Office of Kathy C. Elder, PLLC, in San Antonio. Her practice focuses on elder law, basic estate planning, long-term care planning and probate matters. She received her Juris Doctorate from St. Mary’s University.
Jennifer Castro ’01 BS, BA recently earned a master’s degree in community counseling from the University of Texas at San Antonio. She is donating bone marrow to an 8-year-old girl with aplastic anemia. She encourages everyone to join the National Marrow Donor Program by contacting the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center.
Shalama Jackson ’01 BA is training for the San Diego Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon, which will take place in May. She is training with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, which is a team that raises money for blood cancer research. She is running in memory of her father, Stanley Jackson Jr., and friend Dr. Preston A. Jones Sr., who both died in 2008 after a battle with blood cancer.
Henrietta Onodi ’01 BBA and her husband are celebrating their one year anniversary of opening their new chiropractic clinic, Olympic Health Chiropractic.
Carrie (Terrell) Quiza ’01 BBA graduated in May 2008 from American InterContinental University with an MBA in organizational psychology. She moved to Germany with her husband, Ian Joseph Quiza, who is a staff sergeant in the USAF.
Michaela Rangel ’01 BA opened her own law firm in Dallas and is a criminal defense attorney.
Dr. Oscar Maramag Turingan ’02 Ph.D. is working as the assistant dean of undergraduate studies of the College of Pharmacy and Nursing at the University of Nizwa, Sultanate of Oman.
Lauren (Gonzales) Palermo ’07 BA married Nicholas Palermo the day after she graduated from UIW in December 2007. At the time, he was a U.S. Marine who was being deployed to Iraq. He recently was honorably discharged from service. The couple had their marriage blessing ceremony at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in March and had their reception at the UIW Rosenberg SkyRoom.
