UIW begins Homecoming tradition

This year’s weeklong Homecoming celebration linked traditions and students of the past with new campus activities and alumni of the future!

Embracing UIW’s rich history of service, Homecoming 2008 kicked off with the Headwaters River cleanup, where students and alumni joined the Headwaters Coalition to rid the river of invasive plants. Through the first few days of Homecoming Week, events were centered on celebrating student life, including decorating campus with window painting, sprucing up the student center with mini-Christmas trees, each festooned by a student organization, and the first Thursday Night Lights event, which linked current and past members of Greek life together for a barbecue and flag football match.

For the first time, Alumni and Parent’s Weekend was included in Homecoming this year and was well attended by current parents and alumni. The annual wine and cheese reception with Dr. Agnese was a huge hit. And with UIW’s football team kicking off next year, a new tradition was born during Homecoming 2008: barbecuing before the game. Fans gathered for a pre-scrimmage barbecue in the parking lot near Benson Stadium.

Other events during the weekend included a Decade Dinners for alumni, a demonstration by the synchronized swimming team, and the 23rd annual Light the Way celebration.

Homecoming 2008 concluded the same way it started by preserving the traditions of the past, with the annual

Memorial Mass, honoring the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, and the Golden Graduates’ 50-year class reunion for the Class of 1958, held in conjunction with the fall fashion show.
