Dr. Esther E. Lopez-Mulnix, visiting assistant professor of psychology, recently taught a workshop titled “Win-Win Negotiations.” This workshop is designed to help executives become effective multicultural communicators. Dr. Francisco Lozada, Jr., Thomas A. French Chair in Religious Studies and Chair of the Department of Religious Studies, was last year’s Master of Arts in Theological Studies Special Lecturer at Austin Presbyterian Seminary. The title of his presentation was “The Current Status of Latino/a Biblical Interpretation.” Dr. Hubert R. Robichaux, a Maya archaeologist on the UIW faculty and Candace Pruett, a UIW graduate now associated with the University of Texas at Austin, presented the preliminary findings of their study of ancient Maya texts from the site of Oxpemul at a conference held recently in Mexico.
Sister Martha Ann Kirk was interviewed about her book, Women of Bible Lands: A Pilgrimage to Compassion and Wisdom, for “Catholic Bookmark,” two radio programs sponsored by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington, DC. At the American Academy of Religion Annual Meeting, she presented a poster session on the book and CD-Rom and also a panel “San Antonio Ritual Drama and Dance” with Fr. Jake Empereur and Dr. Glenn Ambrose presiding. She also danced with SAVAE concerts of ancient music that were presented in conjunction with the AAR. Kirk and Covita Moroney of SAVAE presented “Ancient Women, Ancient Echoes” at the national “Call to Action” Conference in Milwaukee. Kirk’s CD-Rom of over 360 illustrations, guides, and video to accompany her book, Women of Bible Lands, was released at that time. In November, the Office of Graduate Studies and Research held a Friday Faculty Research Forum in the Special Collections Room of the Mabee Library. The Friday Forums provide a platform for faculty to share current publishable research with colleagues. Three forums are held each semester.
Featured faculty at the November 19 forum included: Dr. Francis Boakari, “Education in Post-War Sierra Leone: Challenges of Responding to New Realities”; Dr. Sara Kerr, “Ecology of the Parasitic Disease Leishmaniasis in Texas and Nicaragua”; Dr. Lopita Nath, “Cross-Border Migration in South Asia: Napalis in Northeast India.” |
