Laurita Barber '37

Laurita Barber '37 BA celebrated her 90th birthday March 16 with a Puerto Rican-Panamanian theme party thrown by her children.

1960s

Diana I. Marinez '63 BA retired Aug. 31 and is moving back to Michigan. She received the Distinguished Professional Mentor Award from the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science at the annual Conference in Kansas City, Mo., in October.

Susanne Franza Valdez '67 IWHS, '71 BA the executive director of the Greater St. Louis Federal Executive Board, received the Combined Federal Campaign Leadership Award on July 26 at the White House.

1970s

Jacqueline O. Dansby '71 BA was elected president of the San Antonio Women's Hall of Fame during the annual meeting in June. She also serves as the San Antonio director of the Black Former Student Network of Texas A&M University in College Station.

Tommy Cude '77 BBA has opened Cude Motor Company at 2244 Austin Highway in San Antonio. After a 20-year career as the funeral director at Alamo Funeral Home, Cude went to work in the automotive industry, spending four years with Gunn Pontiac and six years with Northside Ford. He and his wife, Beth, have been married 30 years. Their son, Tommy II, wants to be a music teacher when he graduates from Sul Ross State University, and his wife, Catherine, will graduate from Sul Ross in December. He and Catherine have a 3-year-old daughter. Cude's daughter, Christy, is a sophomore at St. Edward's University in Austin and is a pre-dental major.

Cristina Cortina-Rivera '78 MS was recently promoted to chief executive officer for an affiliated hospital in one of the largest healthcare organizations in the country (HCA).

1980s

Paula Schaefer Schriedel '80 BA and her husband, Randal, are proud to announce that their daughter Catherine is attending UIW for the Fall 2007 semester. She accepted a scholarship to play golf at UIW. Catherine was captain of her golf team for four years.

Joseph V. Penn, MD, CCHP, '83 SACHS, '87 BS was recently promoted to clinical associate professor of psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island. He and his wife celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary in October with their two sons, ages 9 and 12.

1990s

Linda Calvert Jacobson '90 BA has signed with Eagle Crown, a licensing agency based in the United Kingdom that represents artists, galleries and museums from the UK, Russia, Japan, United States and Europe. She also has signed with Art, Frame and Beyond, a gallery located on Stone Oak Parkway in San Antonio, to display and sell her original paintings. She has launched an online store at www.lindacalvertjacobson.com featuring products such as mugs, tote bags and pillows decorated with her wildflowers. Jacobson has been working on her contemporary wildflower series since 2003 and her paintings are in private collections throughout Texas as well as California, Colorado, Louisiana, New York, Canada and Mexico. Her work is frequently displayed at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, Texas.

Tony Ciaravino '92 BA played Father Flynn in Doubt, A Parable, the winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Play and Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The play was performed at the Church Bistro & Theatre at King William in San Antonio.

Marina Garcia Marmolejo '92 BA has joined the international law firm of Thompson & Knight LLP as of counsel in the Trial Practice Group of the Firm's Austin office.

Yvette Paredes-Gonzales '93 BA, '00 M.Ed. has been appointed vice principal at LaCoste Elementary in the Medina Valley Independent School District. For the past two years, she was an academic coordinator at Castroville Elementary in MVISD.

Teresa Bernal '92 IWHS, '99 BA has accepted a job at South San ISD teaching 3rd grade at Madla Elementary School. She also earned her Masters of Education in Early Childhood Education from Our Lady of the Lake University in August.

Daniel Morales '97 BA is director of communications and community relations for Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Morales had served for six years as a political appointee in the George W. Bush administration.

Patience Miller '97 BS, '99 MA attended medical school in Galveston. She is practicing obstetrics and gynecology in San Antonio in the medical center area with Sunbelt Ob-Gyn Associates.

2000s

Rene E. Vasquez '01 MS graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston this June with a Ph.D. in immunology. He has accepted a position with Calvert Laboratories in Olyphant, Pa., as study director of immunology.

Jenelva Carter '03 BA played the role of Annelle in the Renaissance Guild performance of Steel Magnolias.

Janell Garcia '03 BA is working in Washington D.C. for the Department of Homeland Security as an information analyst.

Ben Smyth '03 BA completed a Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies from Aquinas Institute of Theology and a Master in Social Work from St. Louis University in May. He works in the campus ministry department at St. Louis University as the service coordinator/faith and justice minister.

Rebecca Molinar '04 BA received her MFA in studio art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in May.

Siobhan Maureen Walsh '05 MS has a nutrition column in the San Antonio Express-News in the Foods section every other Wednesday.
