Dr. Cyndi Wilson Porter
Dr. Cyndi Wilson Porter, dean of the Universe Online, was selected by the director of the Department of the Army Continuing Education System (ACES) to serve on the GoArmyEd Advisory Group. This group serves as a forum for discussion of GoArmyEd issues including possible functional and technical enhancements. Porter joins representatives of colleges and universities, businesses, and the financial community as part of this advisory. She will help ensure that GoArmyEd is a successful tool for participating colleges and universities and for the Army and its soldiers.
Dr. Suk Bin Kong
Dr. Suk Bin Kong, professor of chemistry, participated in a bio-fuel project this summer with the U.S. Department of Drug and Alcohol's Eastern Regional Research Center in Pennsylvania. Bio-fuel is a type of clean and safe alternative energy that some countries are beginning to use. Kong studied the use of energy derived from cooking oils and plans to present a seminar on this ongoing research to students and faculty in the fall.
Winslow Stuart
Winslow Swart, adjunct professor of graduate studies, is also a martial arts instructor and distinguished as one of only 23 advanced ranks worldwide. In July, Swart traveled to Japan to test for sixth-degree master instructor in the Japanese art of Kenseido. His two weeks of travel took him to Saitama, Chiba, and Ibaraki Prefectures on the Kanto plain, north and northwest of Tokyo. Swart's exam was in front of 90 Japanese Kenseido instructors at the annual master instructors training camp in Kashima, Japan, where he also delivered a keynote address. It has been nine years since Swart's last exam. He was recently given the title of Shihan, meaning “teacher of teachers.” Swart has also been bestowed the title of “Kyoshi,” a senior grade of master instructor, and awarded the official rank of “Rokudan.” The first part of his journey was covered in the July 9 edition of Ken Sei Shinbun, a Japanese newspaper.
At the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences national conference in June, Dr. Melinda Adams, assistant professor of fashion management, presented two creative pieces titled “My Furry Friends” and “Pieces of Sanity.”
Dr. David Foglesong, associate professor of biology, gave an invited seminar on his research entitled “Levels of DNA Topoisomerases in Human Tumors” for the Department of Biology at Trinity University on Aug. 28.
Dr. Pat Gower, associate professor of history, submitted courses for consideration by the College Board in a recent review of best practices. Gower's courses were selected as an example of best among history courses.
Dr. Annemarie Walsh
Dr. Annemarie Walsh, associate professor of fashion management, delivered a video conference on careers in fashion and the UIW fashion program to local high school students throughout region 20 in May.
Dr. Lydia Andrade, assistant dean of political science, presented a paper with student Meghan Kennedy at the American Political Science Association Annual Meeting in August.
Part-time art faculty member Phuong-Thau Hua presented “Portraits in Representation,” a one-person exhibit in the Semmes Art Gallery on campus. The exhibit opened with a reception on Sept. 7.
Associate music professor Dr. Ken Metz was co-chair of region VI for the San Antonio National Conference for composers on Sept. 13-16. On Sept. 15, Metz performed in concert at Trinity University with reception following. UIW joined the University of Texas at San Antonio and Trinity music departments as hosts for the conference program. On Sept. 17, conference sessions took place at Incarnate Word.

The Provost Office and Dean of Library Services hosted the 125th anniversary faculty event, “Author's Day,” on Aug. 28 in the Special Collections Room of the Mabee Library. Eight faculty members presented: Sr. Margaret Patrice Slattery, CCVI, president emerita, on “Promises to Keep, Volumes One and Two;” Dr. Richard Peigler, associate professor of biology, on “A Revision of the Silk Moth Genus Samia;” Sr. Eilish Ryan, CCVI, professor of religious studies, on “Rosemary Haughton: Witness to Hope;” Michael Clayton, associate professor of computer graphic arts, on “Visual Design Fundamentals: A Digital Approach;” Dr. Jo LeCoeur, professor of English, on “Onion Poetry, Multi-Layers via Research-Blue Orleans;” Dr. Gilberto Hinojosa, professor of history, on “Tejano Origins in 18th-Century San Antonio;” Dr. David Campos, associate professor of education, on “Understanding Gay and Lesbian Youth: Lessons for School Teachers, Counselors and Administrators;” Dr. Matthias Schubnell, professor of English, on “N. Scott Momaday: The Cultural and Literary Background” and “Conversations with N. Scott Momaday;” and Sr. Martha Ann Kirk, CCVI, professor religious studies, on “Women of Bible Lands: A Pilgrimage to Compassion and Wisdom.”
