Dr. David Foglesong, Associate Professor of Biology, Dr. Bob Connelly, Assistant Vice-President for Academic & Student Affairs, and Sr. Helena Monahan, CCVI Congregational Coordinator, made a presentation entitled “Envisioning Cathedral Park: An Urban Sanctuary.” The presentation took place at the Bishop Jones Center of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas, located on a 19-acre tract of land adjacent to UIW’s undeveloped land across from Olmos Creek. The purpose of the meeting was to envision what the undeveloped tract could be as an urban nature sanctuary. Sr. Helena represented the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word as an Adjacent Property Stakeholder. She explained the history of the CCVI in the area and their plans for stewardship of their 55 acres of undeveloped land. Drs. Foglesong and Connelly represented UIW as Adjacent Property Stakeholders. Dr. Connelly gave an overview of the efforts of the Headwaters Project Committee, which he chairs. Dr. Foglesong gave an overview of the efforts of UIW faculty and student volunteers in service and service learning projects at this site over the past six years. He also presented some preliminary plans for collaborative efforts toward responsible stewardship of both properties. Other participants included faculty from Trinity University, representatives from the City of Alamo Heights, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, and the San Antonio River Authority. Representatives from Mesa Design and Lake Flato Architects gave presentations on Landscape Master Planning and Architecture Master Planning, respectively.
On June 15, a graduate capstone class held a videoconference with professors Dr. David Vequist and Dr. Dan Dominguez in the UIW library. A videoconferencing system was installed during the spring semester as a resource for faculty. The capstone students interacted with Mr. James D. Power IV, an officer with J.D. Power & Associates (and the son of the founder). The graduate capstone class (BMGT 63CS) is currently consulting for McGraw Hill. Dr. Harold Rodinsky, assistant professor of psychology, was recently appointed the local representative for the Midwest Psychological Association (MPA). The MPA hosts an annual Psychology conference in Chicago, IL where undergraduates, graduates, academic faculty and psychological researchers present their current research in a public forum. The MPA's conference is one of the largest and best attended regional conferences in the USA and draws participants from the eastern seaboard, the Midwest and the Rocky Mountain states. The MPA maintains a very high standard of achievement and excellence for those chosen to participate. |
