Five faculty members and 10 graduate students recently completed a social justice and fact-finding program in Guatemala, led by Dr. Pat LeMay Burr, professor and director of the Center for International Peace Studies in the H-E-B School of Business and Administration.
They studied micro-enterprise, coffee production, nongovernmental program development and neighborhood health and education issues. Their work led them to a coffee co-op in the Highlands where they picked coffee beans with 32 families who were guerilla fighters in the Guatemala Civil War. Those families bought the coffee farm and now operate it to fund their school system and all co-op family incomes.
They studied macadamia nut production to supply protein for children, met with microenterprise owners, and were led in seminar discussions by many experts, including Ambassador Sue Patterson, former U.S. Consul General to Guatemala.
