The third annual Mozart Festival Texas (MFT) will be held again on the campus of UIW in Our Lady’s Chapel from July 26 to Aug. 3. The MFT will feature chamber music and orchestral concerts. The concerts will feature the Mozart Festival Orchestra composed of some of South Texas’ most outstanding professional musicians, including members of the UIW faculty and student music community.

On Aug. 3, the audience will delight in a performance of the Jupiter Symphony, K.551, and the Piano Concerto in D Minor, K.466. Conducted by Terence Frazor, the soloist for this concert will be Japanese-Canadian pianist Ryo Yanagatani. Since winning the Gold Medal in the 2009 San Antonio International Piano Competition, Yanagatani has appeared as soloist with the San Antonio Symphony and the Cactus Pear Chamber Music Festival.

Billed as “A Major Event in C,” this highly- unique program on July 27 will consist of three important works, all in the key of C Major. Yanagatani and UIW music faculty member Daniel Kobialka will perform Mozart’s Sonata for Piano and Violin in C, K.303. The Artisan Quartet, led by UIW music faculty member Richard Kilmer, will complete the program with the Dissonance Quartet, K.465 of Mozart and Beethoven’s quartet Op.59, no.3.

Also on the MFT’s schedule is a solo piano recital by Eugene (Rick) Rowley, one of the most highly respected pianists in the U.S. Rowley has performed extensively throughout Latin America, Europe and North America, and has recorded highly-praised solo discs of the music of Chopin, Liszt, and American composers Aaron Copland and Samuel Barber. In addition to the great C Minor Sonata of Mozart, Rowley will perform works by Ravel, Rachmaninoff, Liszt and Scarlatti on Aug. 2.

The festival opens July 26 with the Debut Concert, designed to give performance experience to young artists from San Antonio and South Texas. The program features the Clarinet Quintet, K.581 of Mozart, the First Piano Trio of Johannes Brahms and Beethoven’s Spring Sonata for Piano and Violin.

MTF is the brain-child of UIW adjunct professor Terence Frazor, who serves as the festival’s Artistic Director.
