Sister Mary Elizabeth Joyce, 88, entered into eternal life on April 22 at the Incarnate Word Retirement Community, San Antonio. She was born in Rosecommon, Ireland on Jan. 6, 1916, to William Joseph and Mary Ellen (O'Beirne) Joyce. Mary Elizabeth entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in 1934, professing her first vows in 1939 and perpetual vows in 1944. Before beginning her career in fashion, Sr. Joyce taught at St. Peter-St. Joseph Children's Home and St. Cecilia's School in San Antonio, as well as at Sacred Heart Academy in Del Rio. Sister obtained a bachelors' degree in home economics from Incarnate Word College in 1944 and a master's in fashion design from the University of Houston in 1954, going on to study the art of clothing at Texas Women's University in Denton and the French Fashion Academy in New York, NY. Sister served the majority of her life at Incarnate Word College (now the University of the Incarnate Word). While there, she was named a member of the American Home Economics Association, the Texas Home Economics Association and the Association of College Professors of Textile and Clothing. In addition to teaching classes in fashion and interior design, Sister Mary Elizabeth directed fashion tours to New York, California, Paris, London, Milan, Rome and Switzerland in order to give her students an inside look into what she termed the "temples of chic." She established the Fashion Design Club at what is now UIW and affiliated it with the National Institute of Design. For years, students modeled their original creations in a public show that grew to become an intrinsic part of Fiesta activities. Sister Mary Elizabeth was acknowledged as a leader of design in Texas when she was commissioned by the University of Texas to recreate the costumes in exact design and fabric from the movie “Gone With The Wind” for the commemoration of the movie's golden anniversary in 1989. Sister Mary Elizabeth is survived and dearly missed by her sister, Sister Finbar Joyce, CCVI, other family members and by her Sisters in Christ.
