Inspirations: A Work of Her Own Hands
Victoria Leland '82
'82 BSN Victoria (Prosper) Leland's degree in nursing prepared her for the rigors of patient care but not for some of the heartache she's experienced. After 18 years as a bedside nurse providing neonatal intensive care, she wanted to reach out to new parents with hope. Now a nurse, author, and photographer, Leland compiled poignant Bible verses, touching photos and Christian meditations to create and self-publish an inspirational book, The Work of Your Hand.
Leland has insights beyond those gained from professional service. The mother of a premature baby herself, she wrote the book from her own experience in hopes it would uplift Christian parents who are trying to cope with this difficult life experience. Readers have told her the book has been a source of strength for loved ones facing difficult pregnancies and describe it as a spirit-filled reservoir of comfort and peace. Others have said it's a ray of light, sure to pull anyone out of the darkness that can surround a premature child.
Leland took all the photographs for the book. For the cover, she chose a picture of a father holding his premature baby in the palm of his hand. This image has been selected by the March of Dimes to lead its new national campaign and will be displayed on billboards and television and in magazines throughout this year and next.

Ventures: New Option in Online Auctioning
Parrish Moore '99, '01
Vowing to help students weather the high costs of college, Parrish Moore '99 BA, '01 MAA and Erick Kelley '98 BBA applied their knowledge of the web with a keen sense of what students need to create ACollegeTrade.com, a free online auction site. Launched in October 2006 with over 300,000 hits in the first two weeks, ACollegeTrade links prospective buyers with sellers of items they need --- textbooks, electronics, furniture, DVDs -- at reduced prices to help offset the high cost of living away at school.
Moore is CEO of the company. He says, ”We've used our experiences as students to develop a site that is designed with students' needs in mind.” The site is free and offers features such as “Buy Now” and feedback and rating postings, automatic email alerts and efficient search capabilities. Content may be localized by universities to enable exchanges in person to avoid shipping charges.
The site caters to over 3,000 college campuses across the nation and is also open to outside traders. Over 120 major universities offer customized sub-pages branded with a school's name and colors to attract students who want to trade within their local environments.
To look for items you need, visit www.acollegetrade.com.
